A Christian woman, thrown into the river by the Romans for non having recanted, is discovered by other believers. Marked by the decease of his wife, Delaroche abandons the chestnut to turn this martyrdom into an austere allegory of the sacrifice of youth. He thus renews the theme of Ophelia'south expiry, dear to the Romantic generation and the Pre-Raphaelites.
